YBF INTERVIEW: Taraji P. Henson Reveals How SHE Persuaded Idris Elba To Be Her "No Good Deed" Co-Star + Racial Profiling Advice She Gave Her Son

0

 photo image.jpeg

Before a private screening of her upcoming film, No Good Deeds, the fun and fabulousTaraji P. Henson gave us the low down on the ish we've been wanting to know: Details on working with Idris, her upcoming birthday plans, and her take (as the daughter of a cop) on the racial unrest involving the police.

Taraji tells TheYBF.com about the impassioned phone call she made to co-star Idris Elba and shared her thoughts on the Ferguson protests, and what she tells her son Marcel about dealing with the police.  More inside....

Taraji P. Henson, who stars in No Good Deed (opening a day after her 44th birthday, September 12th), chopped it up with THEYBF.com about producing the thriller with Will Packer ("I read the script and I was like...this is brilliant") and the tear-filled phone call, which Taraj dubbed her "Best Performance Ever", to get Idris Elba to commit to the role.  Details on how to PERSUADE the sexiness that is Idris Elba to do something?  Yeah, we took notes.

Also, Taraji, whose father was a police officer, opened up about being a single mother to 20-year-old son Marcel and the advice she gives him about dealing with law enforcement officials ("I grew up in the hood. So I know what racial profiling is all about. So I’m scared. I worry about him and I put my hands on him while he’s asleep and I put my hands on his car and I say God cover him").

And before she hits network television on the upcoming Lee Daniels-directed series "Empire" with Terrence Howard, she had a few words about the Ferguson protests and for dealing with racially-charged insults on social media.

TheYBF.com correspondent Krysta Underwood caught up with Taraj (wearing a top, skirt and shoes from Marissa Webb) at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hill. Here are the highlights:

On starring in No Good Deed

I’ve never done a thriller before. What attracted me to it was the fact that she didn’t play the victim. That’s what initially got my interest and then I kept reading and I got to that twist at the end and I was like Ahhhhhhhhh – I have to do it! I was like, OH MY GODDD this is brilliant!

On being an Executive Producer of the film with Will Packer

I got the script first. I met Will Packer from No Good Deed. He brought this script to me the first year me and Terrance Howard hosted the soul train awards – 5 to 7 years ago. Will was just up and coming. He had just done Stomp The Yard so he brings me this script and I had kind of heard about him and I read the script and I was like, When can we go! When can we go!

On originally seeking a white male lead for “No Good Deed”

The script was originally sitting at another studio and even though they don’t specify race I think it was written for white leads. Will brought the script to me because it was just sitting around and he was like, 'I think you would be great in this. We gotta find you a lead, It should be a white guy.' So we went down the list of all the incredible white guys, but the schedules didn’t work out.

On shifting focus and finding a black male lead:

Think Like A Man came in the interim and we (she and Will) put that to the side and we did TLAM and I was like, but I want to do No Good Deed! Then Will said it’s hard trying to get a white lead so why don’t we make it two black leads?  I had already worked with Michael Ealy. Tyrese. So then it was like…who haven’t I worked with? Gasp! Idris Elba! And I went after him with a vengeance! [And we are NOT mad at that!]

 photo ngd5-1.jpg

On the “Best Performance Ever” phone call that booked Idris Elba to star in No Good Deed:

Initially when I got the script and we decided it was going to be two black leads we had Idris locked, but then time went on and then he booked Mandela.

I understand as an actor that’s a dream role but, ‘Dude….You do realize you PROMISED you were going to do this movie? I have a son about to go to college! I put this money aside so…I’m gone need you to get it together. I’m a single mother.'

It was the best performance ever. One phone call….and he was there!

On talking sh*t to Idris Elba:

We have a banter and he knows how to push my buttons. I’m quick out the mouth! – I’m slick out the mouth!—and he loves it! He likes to push my buttons. The first thing I told him, I said,

“Let me tell you something Idris, I don’t care what you look like. You ain’t all that fine….

And I know all these women are like Idris! Idris! Idris! I said I’M NOT DOING IT!

On working with Idris in the future:

He did it (No Good Deed) and I love him so much but then I tried to ask for a couple more favors and he said (she mimics his British accent), “Didn’t I already help you?“

I said, 'You helped ME help YOU sucka! See that’s why I have a problem with you Idris!' [laughs]

On the advice she gives 20-year-old son Marcel about dealing with law enforcement:

I’m telling him to be aware of his surroundings at all time! I’m petrified! If something doesn’t feel right get out of there! Fortunately for him and us, I grew up in the hood. So I know what racial profiling is all about. So I’m scared. I worry about him and I put my hands on him while he’s asleep and I put my hands on his car and I say God cover him.

On growing up as the daughter of a cop, and how police presence has changed over time:

First of all, my father was a cop. He was in the service. I grew up in a time where we called police officers “Officer Friendly”. They would come to the schools and they lived in the communities.  Now it’s very, very different. You don’t see as many black cops anymore.

On the Ferguson protesters:

When you have a bunch of people all packed in this little area...what do you think is going to happen? They don’t know to do this peaceful thing. When every time you try to get ahead, it’s somebody there to push you back. What do you think is going to happen? What do you expect?

On Twitter Gangsters:

I get really offended when I say nice things on Twitter and people jump on me. And it’s like, you don’t know my struggle. You don’t know where I come from.

On responding to personal attacks on social media and avoiding Twitter beefs:

I usually take the high road. I just had a very intelligent exchange with a guy on my Instagram the other day and we both saw different things but by the time we finished he was like thank you! OMG! I never saw it like that.

On dealing with racism on social media:

You can’t meet hate with hate. Somebody has to rise above it. So whenever they say horrible things like, “That’s what that Ni**a deserved”, I go ‘you sweet angel I just pray to God you never suffer the loss of a child. God bless you and yours. Kissy Kissy Kiss. ‘

On Beyonce’s VMA Performance:

I missed everything! What was I doing? Traveling! I missed The VMAs, but I caught the baby [Blue Ivy] (does hand motion) on Instagram.

On what she’ll do to celebrate her 44th birthday (September 11th):

I have no idea. Probably working. After I finish this press tour I leave for Chicago to film "Empire". The cast is like what do you want to do? Am I like I don’t know. Do something for me!

On her summer vacation AND being a hypochondriac:

I went to the British Virgin Islands, I went to the Bahamas, almost went to Africa but I’m kind of glad I didn’t go because of what’s going on right now (Ebola outbreak). I would’ve been a nervous wreck! My brain would’ve been like, 'I got it in transit! I know I did!' I’m a hypochondriac anyway! I just know in my mind I would’ve gotten it in transit. I would’ve made myself sick.

Gotta love her!

No Good Deed, starring Taraji P. Henson and Idris Elba, opens nationwide on September 12th.

EXCLUSIVE: "Beyond The Lights" Star Nate Parker On Hollywood’s RESISTANCE To Black Love Stories And His Wife's REACTIONS TO His Love Scenes

0
0

 photo 513466029_DK_1346_B1A6B8ACF342A96895DCA606153514AA.jpg

Film star Nate Parker talked to TheYBF.com about his upcoming love story, Beyond The Lights, why Hollywood doesn't produce more Black-led romance movies and how his wife feels about his steamy love scenes.  More inside...

 photo 513466029_DK_1574_CE9CD69299E916C8BF38CB96A9DA4F45A.jpg

In the highly anticipated love story, Beyond The Lights, Nate Parker (shown at the film's premiere with director Gina Prince-Bythewood and co-star Gugu Mbatha-Raw) stars as a young police officer who falls in love with a suicidal Grammy-winning starlet, despite protests from both their parents. Written, produced and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Disappearing Acts, Love & Basketball), the film hits US theaters on November 14th and TheYBF.com talked exclusively with Nate about Hollywood’s fear of Black love stories (“It’s a journey to get them made, you know, it’s a stigma that exist in Hollywood that we fight everyday), on co-star Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“She is well prepared, well read, elegant, just everything about her screams longevity”), his crush on film legend Ruby Dee (“She was gorgeous”) and why his love scenes brought his wife to tears (“She said she loved it and it was weird”).

On getting his start and moving to Hollywood:

I was a computer programmer. I was never in acting when I was young...I went to a modeling event with my then girlfriend. I met someone when I was there. He asked if I would like to be a part of the program, if I’d like to try and be an actor. I moved out and took his class and that was that. Within a week I moved to LA and had an agent in like 3 days, and then got my first job in 3 months and I never stopped working.

On his first gig:

My first job was actually a commercial, a Sprint commercial. It was back when minutes became free after 7 o clock remember that?! Honestly I remember not answering my phone until 7 o clock.

On his wife’s reaction to Beyond The Lights:

It’s funny because I was nervous. Anytime you’re doing love scenes…it’s just work, you’re a professional. But our job is to be convincing. Our job is to do so much work and do so much preparation that it becomes real life you know.
I talked to Gina and was like I want you to go and be comfortable…so you know I arranged a screening so my wife could see it alone. So she could have the experience of putting it the way she wanted.

I went home and cleaned the house very well and waited patiently for her arrival…I didn’t know what she was going to say. She came in and she was just in tears. She said she loved it and it was weird; but, what she said is….I get to have him every day.

On Hollywood’s resistance to Black love stories:

I think it’s the same reason why there aren’t more black intelligent films. It’s a journey to get them made, you know, it’s a stigma that exist in Hollywood that we fight every day. But the interesting thing is we don’t give our audience enough credit. The reality is people want to see experience that involves the human condition. In Toronto the crowd gave a standing ovation. I was overwhelmed, the standing ovation it speaks to the heart of the film, love doesn’t have a color. You know neither does identity. The reality is, as human beings we go through stuff and I think when you make a film and you make it well, people will connect with as human beings.

On Hollywood’s pursuit of money over art:

If it’s a question to make money, the idea is always, how can we make the most money? Well if we make Beyond The Lights about a white figure, because they are more majority, black people make up 4%, we’ll make more money because its…you know what I mean……

 photo NateParkerUrbanworldFilmFestivalrRX5I_l7Zujl.jpg

On co-star Gugu Mbatha-Raw's (above) greatest talents:

She’s the most talented actress I’ve ever worked with. She is well prepared, well read, elegant, just everything about her screams longevity. I have a feeling about these things. She’s incredible, she’s an incredible person and she’s an incredible talent.

On Producers Reggie & Gina Prince-Bythewood

They’re a walking example of this film. They’re in desperate love. You can see it in the way they deal with their children. And they bring that love to their work. I’ve never heard Gina raise her voice. For the record, to never raise your voice as a director means you can motivate people simply by being yourself. She never has to go to extreme measures with people. And people work so hard for her you know. And Reggie, he is always there for her. Never tried to dominate, he never tried to push her to do things she doesn’t want to do, he was just there. When she needed help or when she needed someone to talk to or when she just wanted to hang out with the kids, he’d bring the kids. It was great. It was wonderful watching a healthy relationship.

Comparing Gina’s film Love & Basketball to Beyond The Lights:

I think there are alike traits in all of her films. If you look at Love and Basketball and now Beyond The Lights, she has captured the essence of love. I think she just has a genius that a lot of people don’t have. She’s a writer, she’s a director, she’s a producer, she’s a renaissance woman and I think everything she does will be successful and I count myself to be apart.

On if he has “crushes” on other women:

Absolutely not. Well maybe Ruby Dee. Man, I love Ruby Dee. When she passed away it hit me on an emotional level. She was so beautiful. A lot of people never looked up pictures of her when she was young. Oh my goodness she was gorgeous. She was drop dead gorgeous. I have a picture with her. I met her at a play and that was my crush. And I’m still in love with her.

On his next projects:

I’m about to direct a film that starts in December…my directing feature film debut.

We’ll keep you posted about Nate’s directorial debut, and check out Beyond The Lights (starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, Minnie Driver, Colson “MGK” Baker and Danny Glover) on November 14th.

The fresh faced politically controversial actress, who calls herself a Black Conservative, posed it up on the carpet.  She was recently featured in Net-a-Porter fashion magazine The Edit talking about her rough up bringing and political stance:

“I had to be tough to survive.  I come from nothing, so other people’s opinions don’t scare me.”

“When I get hateful tweets, I just re-tweet them and then my fans pile in and attack the haters while I sit back.”

And she also revealed her family, including cousin Dame Dash, no longer speak to her because of her public outspokenness against President Obama and controversial opinions about race.

"My family and I have not spoken.  My cousin Damon and my brother [Darien, CEO of DME Interactive Holdings] were role models to me because they were great capitalists. Now we’re not really talking because they were the ones who told me to keep my mouth shut. They felt that I should do certain things because I’m black.” She pauses.

“Certain friends don’t speak to me any more either. But you know what? In the street I get [approached by] so many people of every color saying: ‘Thank you so much for standing up and being so brave.’ I thought it was time to have a black president and that it would unite us in such a profound way. But as a country, I don’t think we’ve been so divided since the Civil Rights Movement. I mean, isn’t it extraordinary that we are even discussing race in 2014?”

Yes, Stacy.  It IS amazing we're still talking about race in 2014.  And we will continue until we stop pushing racial strife under the rug as if it doesn't exist.  Food for thought.

She then had some fun at the afterparty:

Kobe & Vanessa Bryant And Friends Hit Premiere For Self-Made Bio "MUSE"

 photo fefefefevff.png

Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa welcomed NBA friends and more to the London West Hollywood to watch the premiere of his visual biography MUSE.  See red carpet pics inside and get the deets on his passion-project...

 photo KobeBryantKobeBryantMusePremieresWestU6fXBjeV90ll.jpg

It was a red carpet affair at The London Hotel - West Hollywood last night as NBA legend/icon Kobe Bryant (shown above with wife Vanessa) premiered his film MUSE. (SIDEBAR- if The London Hotel sounds familiar, its the place where Lupita N'yongo's $150K pearl Oscar gown was stolen. We hope Vanessa kept an eye on her own ish!)

 photo PremiereShowtimeKobeBryantMuseRedCarpetiHg5ZXqBKp6l.jpg

MUSE is story of Kobe Bryant.  The who, what, where, why and how of his life.  It's not simply a set of interviews or Wikipedia facts, Kobe completely dove into the making of the film (alongside director Gotham Chopra, son of Deepak Chopra).

When asked about the autobiographical documentary, and how he came up with the idea, Kobe told VARIETY,

“I’m just constantly curious. If you have an idea, and if you’re obsessive about what you do, I want to know why.
There’s a common thread between how John Williams composes a score, and how Ariana Huffington decided to build the Huffington Post. There are common threads, and I want to learn about those things."

Kobe Bryant has MUSES. And he's interested storytelling. This project seems to merge the two. It's his way of telling his story, something he's not typically known to do.  He reveals how he built "KOBE Bryant" into the legend he has become.  Showtime president David Nevins said it best, “Kobe Bryant’s Muse” is not a sports documentary:

“This is not Bill Russell looking back on his career 25 years later. This is a man who’s sort of at the height of his power, going really deep with self-examination. And that is rare.”

Famously private, the documentary covers EVERYTHING, including that "incident" where he cheated on Vanessa. It's all here. Kobe tweeted,

 photo mdrverfrveev.png

We also spotted an open letter Kobe recently penned to his fans.  Alongside MUSE, it shows the depth of his character and his forcefulness as a warrior.  You'll walk about with a complete understanding of KOBE - the alpha warrior champion.

"Hunt or be hunted has always been my mentality. I don’t hide the aggressiveness of competition behind All-Star parties, sponsored events, and the idea that the weekend game is a well deserved break.

The fans voted me in to watch me take on the world’s best. That competition is what I love.

Whether my counterpart is ready or not, resting or not, or just feels like going through the motions, it has nothing to do with me. When I play, I compete, and if you’re too busy acting cool for the fans or celebrities courtside then I will demolish you in front of them.

I want MVP. There’s no shame in feeling that way. Why should there be? I want the world to see me dominate the players that are debated by millions of fans as being on my level. Competing with this spirit is fun to me and it kills me that I’m not able to participate this year. I am a spectator from home.

As a fan, I can only hope one player decides to take the game on the same way I do and raise its level from the opening tip. Being passive aggressive in this competition means you’re fine with simply going with the flow and unwilling to disturb the calm waters of the game to accomplish your goals.

I see that as a weakness. It’s our nature to compete. Throw the ball up and let’s see who the alpha is.

Maybe I’m just old school. Maybe my line of thinking is that of a rotary phone. Maybe this smartphone generation enjoys sharing games of domination. Maybe they like taking turns. Maybe they enjoy competing passive aggressively.

Maybe I’m the one with the problem, maybe it is right to have multiple alphas, maybe I’m the weaker one, the selfish one. Maybe, just maybe …

Either way, I refuse to change what I am. A lion has to eat. Run with me or run from me."
